Sometimes when I feel like torturing myself, I like to look up people I now resent in some way on their various social media sites and insult them in my head. One of the people on this list is a Welsh girl I slept with during the Summer. It is not her precisely which annoys me, she is quite a polite person, but it's the nature of which she writes about herself.
You see, this person writes in complete grammatical acrobats. It is hard to understand what she is saying because she clutters her sentences with an abundance of punctuation marks (her favourite seems to be the poor, sad, whored out comma) and elaborate words that, for the most part, seem misused. There can be only two possible reasons for this: 1) She is aware of her intellect and instead of showing it through her ideas, she uses superficial means of expressing it or 2) She thinks complex writing equates to good writing. Now, I'm no expert on what good writing is. In fact, many of my favourite writers are looked down upon by literary academics -- possibly looked down upon through their monocle and corn pipe -- but surely, GOOD writing requires clarity and eloquence. Think of The Bell Jar. Think of, as an opposite example, Great Expectations. These books are not hard to read at all but it is the subtlety embedded in the language which makes them so well written.
The irony is, I have read her poetry... and it is simple and blunt, almost to a fault. The few times the license to be as intricate as possible is allowed and she squanders it. Also one of her poems is titled 'Hipster Gulls' where she somehow relates the hip people of the world to consumer seagulls. Ew.
